Pantanal is the largest wetland in the world, and one of the most bio diverse ecosystems on Earth. It mostly lies in Brazil and some parts of Bolivia and Paraguay, but majority in Brazil, in the state of Mato Grosso. It sprawls over 14K sq km and 80% of the pantanal will be flooded during rainy season.Pantanal comes from the Portuguese word Pântano means "wet or marsh land".
Pantanal is famous for the Hyacinth Macaws; profoundly called Arara (the blue parrot in the famous movie RIO) is an endangered species due to the
extreme smuggling.
The ecosystem is home to 1000 bird species, 400 fish species, 300 mammal species, 480 reptile species, 1132 butterfly species, 93 reptile species and over 9000 vertebrate species.
The Pantanal has an average yearly rainfall of 1,000–1,400 mm (39–55 in) and average temperature is 25 °C (77 °F), but temperatures can fluctuate from 0 to 40 °C (32 to 104 °F).
